A beautiful true story

What is this book about?

Anne, from Friesland, is nineteen years old when he enlists as a soldier in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army (KNIL). Once on Java, he meets Charlotte, a native of the island. She is the love of his life, and together they lead a wonderful existence.

When the Japanese army invades and annexes the Dutch East Indies, everything changes. Dutch soldiers are imprisoned in prisoner-of-war camps, and for Anne , this marks the beginning of a terrible period.

Charlotte is twenty-eight years old when she becomes pregnant and, with four small children, has to survive as an "outdoor camper" under harsh conditions. On the island of Java, she lives in constant fear of being imprisoned with her children in the women's camp by a Dutch soldier.

While Anne is forced to perform hard labor in several internment camps and fights for his life, Charlotte tries to keep herself and the children going under the Japanese regime. When Anne is transferred for the third time, the question arises whether she will ever see him alive again.
