Discover the power of the WmRP Edit Optimizer

Give a large portion ofyour editing and proofreading

The manuscript is finished, and now the editing phase begins. This phase is very labor-intensive and prone to errors, with so many points to check that, without realizing it, you end up missing more mistakes than you realize. These are errors related to the general conventions of the Dutch language—errors that are so numerous and varied that, as a human being, you simply can’t address them as consistently and accurately as you think you can.

We discovered this while developing and testing the WmRP Editing Optimizer. It not only identifies errors but also corrects most of them for you in Word or InDesign. This saves you hours of work and improves the quality of your manuscript in an unprecedented way.

So much work, and yet something still remains

Editing a manuscript takes many hours. A large part of that time is spent tracking down the same types of errors over and over again. You can use programs like Word or InDesign to some extent, but even they fall short and miss certain issues. And so you’re left with more work than you might like—even spelling and grammar errors.

So read it yourself. And during that phase, pay attention to words that should or shouldn’t be written as one word, punctuation, unnecessary spaces, the use of quotation marks, missing words or, conversely, repeated words, sentence structure, and so much more.

Errors can also occur when implementing the changes—for example, because a word was removed from location A but not from location B, or because you made a typo yourself. These are errors that aren’t always caught when someone else reviews the work.

Because the more often you read a text, the less you notice. Your brain automatically turns a sequence of letters into the correct word or sentence. Sooner or later, everyone working on a book becomes “reading-blind”: the author, the editor, the designer, and the publisher.

Then there’s the issue of consistency. It’s easy to make a typo in a person’s name, but you might not notice it right away when that person reappears thirty pages later. Or there might be inconsistencies in ages, the passage of time, or dates. That, too, requires a very keen eye and a good memory.

And that’s exactly the weak point of editing. Until now, it’s been largely done by humans and, as a result, more prone to errors than you’d like as an author, editor, or publisher. The final result is always the best version—until someone discovers the next error. And according to our tests, there are far more of those than you realize.

How much it will cost you

Until now, as an author, editor, designer, or publisher, you had to go through all the text yourself and correct any errors you found manually (or have them corrected). And that costs you:

Time

An unnecessary number of hours are spent on the kind of editing and correction work that could be done more efficiently. Time that would be better spent looking for ways to improve the structure and quality of a story or book. Because that is—and always will be—a task for humans.

Quality

You pay for—or are paid for—editing work that comes with no guarantee. You don’t know what might have been overlooked, and such errors can lead to negative reviews of a book and, consequently, a negative perception of the quality of the editing work.

Authority

Most readers won't mind a minor mistake here and there, but if there are a lot of errors, they might lose interest, and you—as the author and publisher—will get a bad reputation.

Peace

You know there’s still something in there. You just don’t know where. And as an author, that can be especially hard to deal with—especially when readers take the time to contact you directly. As a publisher, you know that mistakes in books are inevitable and that the book gets better with each printing, but if you’re committed to delivering quality, it still bothers you.

Rereading it once more helps only to a limited extent. An extra round of editing takes a lot of time, and it’s still a human process with the same blind spots. In fact, the work can be frustrating, because you keep finding things again, even though they’ve already been reviewed so many times.

That got author, editor, and publisher Marleen te Vaanholt of Walking my Revolution Publishers thinking. In an age when AI is capable of so much, surely there must be a better way? And indeed, it is possible—and it leads to enormous improvements in workflow, time, and quality.

As far as we know, this is the only software that checks Dutch-language books so thoroughly and applies the corrections directly to your own Word or InDesign file.

What does the WmRP Edit Optimizer do for you?

Thanks to the use of the WmRP Edit Optimizer:

  • Your manuscript or print file will be checked against more than 130 criteria, including:
  • spelling and grammar errors: including the use of "d" and "t," verb tense, verb conjugation, and more,
  • errors in punctuation usage: whether or not to use a comma, missing periods, duplicate punctuation, a period at the end of a sentence, use of quotation marks, and more,
  • many common situations in which the rules of the Dutch language are not applied correctly —such as whether to write words together or separately,
  • errors such as missing or duplicate words, vowel collisions, word mergers, and more,
  • How to write numbers,
  • duplicate lines, paragraphs, or sections of text that were already mentioned earlier in that context and
  • if necessary and possible, the specific house rules that apply to you.
  • Thanks to the checklist, you'll get an overview of everything that's been found;
  • errors for which there is only one correct solution have already been corrected for you in the Word or InDesign file;
  • so you don't have to handle a large portion of the errors yourself, which greatly reduces the likelihood of errors in that process;
  • Do you know which findings you still need to address;
  • You'll receive a glossary that helps you identify inconsistencies in the spelling of names and terms.

The WmRP Editing Optimizer goes a long way beyond standard spell-checkers or writing aids. It will make your work so much easier and better, allowing you to focus your full attention on what you still do best: the content. After all, AI is already capable of a great deal, but it operates based on rules and therefore cannot assess, for example, whether the text is generally clear or whether the manuscript is already strong enough as a story to be sent to print.

For whom

This is for you if

  • you write, edit, or publish a book in Dutch and want to achieve more in less time;
  • you want to work more efficiently and spend your time primarily on the tasks where you are indispensable;
  • you don't know or understand all those dozens of rules of the Dutch language in detail, and therefore can't apply them consistently;
  • As a designer or publisher, you want to perform a final quality check on the editorial content and design to ensure that common errors have indeed been caught before going to press.

This isn't for you if

  • you expect that you'll never have to edit anything yourself again;
  • you are not willing to review and address the remaining issues.

The files you submit are not read by a human and are used solely internally by the software to provide and optimize the service. We retain your files for up to thirty days after delivery. If something goes wrong on your end, we still have the backup. After thirty days, all files associated with your order will be deleted.

FAQ

Exactly. The books used to test the software had, for the most part, already gone through several rounds of editing, yet they still had dozens to hundreds of areas for improvement. Good editing and this software complement each other.

A spell-checker underlines individual words it doesn’t recognize. The WmRP Editing Optimizer also checks sentence structure, punctuation, dialogue, consistency throughout the book, the table of contents, the colophon, and—for print files—the formatting. And it corrects a large portion of these issues for you directly in your own file, including in InDesign.

WmRP Edit Optimizer finds an astonishing number of issues, but it can’t find everything. Unclear passages, text that doesn’t flow, and a narrative arc that doesn’t make sense fall outside the scope of linguistic rules. The software also can’t always fully read text that appears as an image in your book.

No. Word choice, sentence length, tone, repetition as a stylistic device, a character’s deliberate dialect, and your own terminology remain as they are. Only elements that are incorrect according to spelling and grammar rules—and that can only be correct in one way—are corrected. Anything that could change the meaning is listed in the master list, and you decide what to do about it.

The WmRP Edit Optimizer has been extensively tested and does exactly what it says it does. Thanks to the checklist, you know exactly what has and hasn’t been done for you yet. This allows you to review the changes yourself and undo any that you feel should be done differently.

Yes, of course. We strongly recommend it precisely because of the high quality delivered by the WmRP Editing Optimizer. This also allows you to deliver a higher-quality end product to your clients. Given the price and the enormous time savings, there’s no reason not to use it.

Partially. Flemish has its own vocabulary, and words can have very different meanings in Flanders. The software is primarily designed for Dutch and is only partially adapted to Flemish. You can simply place an order. Keep in mind, however, that the software may flag words and constructions that are common in Flanders as errors. In that case, you’ll have to use your own judgment more than a Dutch author or editor would.

Yes. Line breaks, capital letters for emphasis, and your form of address are treated as stylistic choices by the software. However, grammar rules and standard conventions still apply.

There are publishing processes where you can get quite far using Word documents if you then convert them to PDF for printing. In those situations, you submit a docx file, and that document is also evaluated for its layout.

If you work with Word or InDesign, it doesn't matter whether you use a Mac or a Windows computer.

If you're working in Pages, you can first convert the text to a Word file (.docx) and then create a PDF from it. You'll receive the corrections back in that Word file, not in Pages. Formatting may shift during the conversion. For this reason, we do not recommend using this service to proofread a print-ready file from Pages.

If you're using Affinity Publisher, you'll only receive the master list and the glossary, and you'll need to make all the changes yourself.

We aim to process your order within two to five business days after we receive the necessary files. If it looks like it will take longer, we’ll let you know, and you can cancel free of charge as long as your manuscript hasn’t been processed yet.
