DISCOVER THE MANY BENEFITS OF THE WMRP EDIT OPTIMIZER

Give a large portion of your editing and proofreading to others

The manuscript is finished, and now the editing phase begins. This phase is very labor-intensive and prone to errors, with so many points to check that, without realizing it, you end up missing more mistakes than you realize. These are errors related to the general conventions of the Dutch language—errors that are so numerous and varied that, as a human being, you simply can’t address them as consistently and accurately as you think you can.

We discovered this while developing and testing the WmRP Editing Optimizer. It not only identifies errors but also corrects most of them for you in Word or InDesign. This saves you hours of work and improves the quality of your manuscript in an unprecedented way.

So much work, and yet something still remains

Editing a manuscript takes many hours. A large part of that time is spent tracking down the same types of errors over and over again. You can use programs like Word or InDesign to some extent, but even they fall short and miss certain issues. And so you’re left with more work than you might like.

Errors can also occur when implementing the improvements, either because words are inserted or moved, or because you make a typo yourself. These are errors that aren’t always caught when someone else proofreads the text. After all, the more you read a text, the less you notice. Your brain automatically turns a string of letters into the right word or a correct sentence. Sooner or later, everyone working on a book becomes “blind to the text”: the author, the editor, the designer, and the publisher.

Then there’s the issue of consistency. It’s easy to make a typo in a person’s name, but you might not notice it right away when that person’s name comes up again thirty pages later. Or there might be inconsistencies in ages, the passage of time, or dates. That, too, requires a very keen eye and a good memory.

And that’s precisely the weak point of editing. Until now, it has largely been done by humans and is therefore more prone to errors than you, as an author, editor, or publisher, would like. As a result, the final result of an editing round is always the best version—until someone discovers the next error. And according to our tests, there are far more of those than you realize.

How much it will cost you

Until now, as an author, editor, designer, or publisher, you had to go through all the text yourself and correct any errors you found manually (or have them corrected). And that costs you:

Time

An unnecessary number of hours are spent on the kind of editing and correction work that could be done more efficiently. Time that would be better spent looking for ways to improve the structure and quality of a story or book. Because that is—and always will be—a task for humans.

Quality

You pay for—or are paid for—editing work that comes with no guarantee. You don’t know what might have been overlooked, and such errors can lead to negative reviews of a book and, consequently, a negative perception of the quality of the editing work.

Authority

Most readers don't mind the occasional mistake, but if there are too many errors, they might lose interest, and you—as the author and publisher—will get a bad reputation.

Peace

You know there’s still something in there. You just don’t know where. And as an author, that can be especially hard to deal with—especially when readers take the time to contact you directly. As a publisher, you know that mistakes in books are inevitable and that the book gets better with each printing, but if you’re committed to delivering quality, it still bothers you.

Rereading it once more helps only to a limited extent. An extra round of editing takes a lot of time, and it’s still a human process with the same blind spots. In fact, it’s more likely to be frustrating, because you keep finding new issues even though the text has already been reviewed so many times.

That got author, editor, and publisher Marleen te Vaanholt of Walking my Revolution Publishers thinking. In an age when AI is capable of so much, surely there must be a better way? And indeed, it is possible—and it leads to enormous improvements in workflow, time, and quality.

Where does the WmRP Edit Optimizer check for?

Thanks to the use of the WmRP Editing Optimizer , your manuscript will be checked on over 140 points.

Text

Consider the following points, among others:

  • spelling and grammar errors: correct use of "d" and "t," consistency in the use of the present and past tenses, correct verb conjugation, and more;
  • many common situations in which the rules of the Dutch language are not applied correctly —such as whether to write words together or separately;
  • errors such as missing or duplicate words;
  • vowel collisions and mergers;
  • errors in punctuation usage: whether or not to use a comma, duplicate punctuation, a period at the end of a sentence, consistency in the use of quotation marks, and the correct use of quotation marks;
  • the spelling of numbers;
  • duplicate lines and paragraphs, and even unnecessary repetition of text that had already been mentioned in that context;
  • checking the spelling of terms and names that appear in the manuscript, so that inconsistencies in the use of lowercase and uppercase letters are identified and typos are highlighted;
  • your own house rules as much as possible.

Formatting

In addition, the formatting is checked. This includes the following types of issues:

  • detecting and removing spaces at the beginning or end of a paragraph;
  • Identifying inconsistencies in the labeling of structural elements
  • adjusting it if that structural element is otherwise applied consistently throughout the manuscript;
  • identifying formatting discrepancies in text that, for example, arose because formatting was unintentionally carried over when editing the text or that remained due to incorrect labeling of the relevant passage;
  • Find and delete empty paragraphs at the end of a chapter and replace them with a page break.

What are the benefits of using the WmRP Edit Optimizer for me?

When you run a file check using the WmRP Edit Optimizer , you will receive the following:

1

Verification of all components that are part of the software at that time.

2

Incorporating corrections into your source file (DOCX or InDesign) for those errors where there is only one correct solution and 100% certainty that the correct error message has been corrected.

3

A checklist that provides an overview, by category, of everything that has been found, what has already been done for you, and what still requires your attention.

4

A glossary that helps you identify inconsistencies in the spelling of names and terms.

Once the revised source file has been delivered, you’ll know exactly what the manuscript looked like before, you’ll have a clear picture of the quality of the work, and you’ll know exactly which issues still require your personal attention in terms of text and formatting. Furthermore, you won’t have to correct a large portion of the errors yourself, which greatly reduces the risk of introducing new errors.

ConsistencyFixed, but limitedSignificant variation in the number of errors found each timeConsistent error messages

Accountability––Each report can be found by page and line number

The inspection is only as good as the instructions you provide.

You really need to clearly define what is wrong and what is right.

That’s what we’ve achieved with the WmRP Editing Optimizer after many hours of tweaking and testing on various types of manuscripts. It not only checks your source file but also makes changes to it only for those error messages where it’s certain the correction is correct. Each error message can be traced back to the page and line numbers in your corresponding PDF document, allowing you to maintain control and oversight of the file check and its quality at all times.

The file review performed by the WmRP Redigeer Optimizer will make your work so much easier and better, allowing you to focus your full attention on the things where you, as a human, still make the difference: the content. After all, AI is already capable of a great deal, but it operates based on rules and therefore cannot determine, for example, whether the text is generally clear, whether the manuscript is already strong enough as a story, or what the correct solution is for certain types of ambiguities in the text.

Why would I want to use the file check feature?

This is for you if:

  • you write, edit, or publish a book in Dutch and want to achieve more in less time;
  • you want to work more efficiently and spend your time primarily on the tasks where you are indispensable;
  • you don't know or understand all those dozens of rules of the Dutch language in detail, and therefore can't apply them consistently;
  • If you're a designer or publisher, you want to perform a final quality check on the editorial content and design to ensure that common errors have indeed been caught before you go to press.

This isn't for you if:

  • You expect the WmRP Edit Optimizer to do everything for you, so you no longer have to edit the text yourself;
  • you are not willing to review and address the remaining issues;
  • thinks you can do it better or really enjoys finding and correcting simple language mistakes.

But take a moment to think about what you want to achieve. Are you settling for “good enough,” or are you aiming for the best possible result?

Significant improvement in quality through the use of this software

Detection of tens to hundreds of error messages!

Until now, as authors, editors, and publishers, we had to settle for what we, as human beings, were able to find. And even though we kept finding new errors with every round of editing, at some point—for reasons of time and cost—we still opted for the label “good enough for print.” Not because we thought it would be error-free, but because at some point you have to make that choice if you actually want to publish a book.

After testing it on several books, it turns out that the WmRP Editing Optimizer still finds many areas that could be improved. In fact, there are far more than you’d like.

That's a bit hard to swallow. The number of spelling errors found is actually not too bad. But the rest…?

Most of these are often mistakes that most readers don't notice or don't mind. But for you as an author, editor, designer, or publisher, that makes a huge difference.

Using the WmRP Editing Optimizer will greatly improve the overall quality of your book and help ensure that critical readers will have far fewer complaints once it’s in print. Because even though the WmRP Editing Optimizer contributes to a significant improvement in quality, it is still a tool that complements the (final) editing process.

FAQ

Exactly. The books used to test the software had, for the most part, already gone through several rounds of editing, yet they still had dozens to hundreds of areas for improvement. Good editing and this software complement each other.

A spell-checker underlines individual words that may be incorrect, and you have to review and approve each suggestion one by one. The WmRP Editing Optimizer not only flags those errors but also automatically corrects anything that is clearly wrong.

In addition, the software also checks sentence structure, punctuation, dialogue, the table of contents, the colophon, consistency throughout the book, and common formatting errors.

Errors that are clearly incorrect are already corrected for you in the file we provided, so you don’t have to approve them one by one. You’ll also receive a summary list so you can see what has been corrected for you and what you still need to review and correct yourself.

The WmRP Editing Optimizer finds an astonishing number of issues, but it can’t find everything. Unclear passages, text that doesn’t flow, and a narrative arc that doesn’t make sense fall outside the scope of linguistic rules. The software also can’t always fully read text that appears as an image in your book.

It’s best to use the WmRP Editing Optimizer as early as possible. Ideally, this should be when you, as the author, feel you’re ready to move on to the editing phase. As the author, you can then choose to use this tool first to improve the quality yourself before seeking out an editor. That way, you can clearly indicate to them which parts of the manuscript have already been reviewed and where you still need additional help.

Is the book already in the editing phase or the print-ready phase? Even then, it’s advisable to use this tool, because it not only handles a large portion of the editing work but also checks the formatting. Experience shows that dozens to hundreds of errors are discovered.

No. Word choice, sentence length, tone, repetition as a stylistic device, a character’s deliberate dialect, and your own terminology remain as they are. Only elements that are incorrect according to spelling and grammar rules—and that can only be correct in one way—are corrected. Anything that could change the meaning is listed in the master list, and you decide what to do about it.

The WmRP Edit Optimizer has been extensively tested and does exactly what it says it does. Thanks to the checklist, you know exactly what has and hasn’t been done for you yet. This allows you to review the changes yourself and undo any that you feel should be done differently.

Yes, of course. We strongly recommend it precisely because of the high quality delivered by the WmRP Editing Optimizer. This also allows you to deliver a higher-quality end product to your clients. Given the price and the enormous time savings, there’s no reason not to use it.

Partially. Flemish has its own vocabulary, and words can have very different meanings in Flanders. The software is primarily designed for Dutch and is only partially adapted to Flemish. You can simply place an order. Keep in mind, however, that the software may flag words and constructions that are common in Flanders as errors. In that case, you’ll have to use your own judgment more than a Dutch author or editor would.

Yes. Line breaks, capital letters for emphasis, and your form of address are treated as stylistic choices by the software. However, grammar rules and standard conventions still apply.

There are publishing workflows where you can get quite far using Word documents if you then convert them to PDF for printing. In those situations, you submit a docx file. By default, such documents are already reviewed for formatting at every stage, including when you use them for printing.

If you work with Word or InDesign, it doesn't matter whether you use a Mac or a Windows computer.

If you're working in Pages, you can first convert the text to a Word file (.docx) and then create a PDF from it. You'll receive the corrections back in that Word file, not in Pages. Formatting may shift during the conversion. For this reason, we do not recommend using this service to proofread a print-ready file from Pages.

If you're using Affinity Publisher, you'll only receive the master list and the glossary, and you'll need to make all the changes yourself.

We aim to process your order within 1–5 business days after we receive the necessary files. If it looks like it will take longer, we’ll let you know, and you can cancel free of charge as long as your manuscript hasn’t been processed yet.
